چکیده

Cyber-defense research has been severely limited by the lack of an experimental infrastructure for testing new theories and new technologies in realistic scenarios. Current testbeds are mostly smallscale and limited to small numbers of machines. The cyber DEfense Technology Experimental Research (DETER) testbed, provides a medium-scale test environment with more than 300 nodes. However, there is increasing interest in running experiments at very large scale with more than 1,000 nodes. This paper describes how experiments can be federated across existing smalland medium-scale testbeds using the University of Utah’s Emulab software, such as the DETER testbed, to enable the running of massive-scale experiments. We describe the Emulab software and the DETER testbed and we detail the necessary steps for running a federated experiment. We provide a status update on our progress and discuss how a manually configured proof-of-concept experiment could be performed.

Integrated Scientific Workflow Management for the Emulab Network Testbed

The main forces that shaped current network testbeds were the needs for realism and scale. Now that several testbeds support large and complex experiments, management of experimentation processes and results has become more difficult and a barrier to high-quality systems research. The popularity of network testbeds means that new tools for managing experiment workflows, addressing the ready-mad...

Trusted Disk Loading in the Emulab Network Testbed

Network testbeds like Emulab allocate physical computers to users for the duration of an experiment. During an experiment, a user has nearly unfettered access to the devices under his or her control. Thus, at the end of an experiment, an allocated computer can be in an arbitrary state. A testbed must reclaim devices and ensure they are properly configured for future experiments. This is particu...

How to Build a Better Testbed: Lessons from a Decade of Network Experiments on Emulab

The Emulab network testbed provides an environment in which researchers and educators can evaluate networked systems. Available to the public since 2000, Emulab is used by thousands of experimenters at hundreds of institutions around the world, and the research conducted on it has lead to hundreds of publications. The original Emulab facility at the University of Utah has been replicated at doz...

A Variable Structure Observer Based Control Design for a Class of Large scale MIMO Nonlinear Systems

This paper fully discusses how to design an observer based decentralized fuzzy adaptive controller for a class of large scale multivariable non-canonical nonlinear systems with unknown functions of subsystems’ states. On-line tuning mechanisms to adjust both the parameters of the direct adaptive controller and observer that guarantee the ultimately boundedness of both the tracking error and tha...

Cooperative and Diminutive Interplay between Halogen, Hydride and Cation-σ Interactions

In the present study, the cooperative and diminutive interplay between halogen, hydride, and cation-σ interactions are studied in HMgH···Li+(Na+)···NCCl, Li+(Na+)···HMgH···ClCN and HMgH···ClCN···Li+(Na+) complexes by means of ab initio calculations. To better understand the cooperative or diminutive effects in the ternar...
